Activities for Children and Young People
May half-term workshops for kids
Aboriginal Dot Painting workshop
The Aboriginal Peoples of Australia have a special way of making pictures of the land and animals where they live using hundreds of dots of paint. Different colours and patterns have different meanings and the paintings are often maps showing rivers, hills and cliffs. In this workshop, you will learn some of these symbols and create your own painting showing your walk to school or to the park, or maybe a journey from a story or from your own imagination.
Book making workshop- with a twist
Shh! It’s a secret! Make an envelope book with secret hiding places. Bring some of your secret bits to put in your finished book (small and flat things like stamps, sweet wrappers, pictures).
Also, make a notebook using cards and sewing.
All materials provided – but feel free to bring scrap coloured papers, magazine pictures etc.
Aboriginal Bagu Clay workshop
Bagu were firestick figures carried from camp to camp because fire was so important for cooking, warmth and. In this workshop you will learn about the Aboriginal artists who have created these Bagu from clay and woven fibres, design your own figures and then make them from clay and raffia.
