March 2015 – Expanding Courthouse seeks additional Board members

Now in its eleventh successful year Otley’s Arts and Resource Centre, Otley Courthouse, is looking for additional members for its Board. The Courthouse is an independent charity committed to improving the range and quality of Arts provision, and other facilities, for the benefit of the residents of Otley and the surrounding area. Since opening in 2004 its development has been overseen by a Board of between 7 and 9 people – all volunteers with a commitment to developing the role of the Courthouse.

So successful has its first decade been that the Courthouse now has an annual turnover which is almost double that which it started with. It has grown in all areas – it now has over 100 volunteers; the equivalent of 4 full time staff; a much expanded programme of music, theatre and film events; and regular events on every day of the week.

New initiatives in the pipeline include the setting up of a Monday morning ‘Baby Café’ (including a monthly ‘Baby Cinema’), outreach activities from West Yorkshire Playhouse and Opera North; screenings of Globe Theatre Shakespeare plays; and Literature events organised through Yorkshire’s Small Venues Network.

David Robson, chair of the Otley Courthouse Board, explained “With all of this growth and development we have decided that the time has come to seek additional Board members – taking the size of the Board up to maybe 12 people. We would welcome anyone with a real interest in moving the Courthouse into its second decade – experience in areas such as Marketing, Programming, Finance and Fundraising would be particularly useful, but we would be interested in talking to anyone who wishes to work as part of the Courthouse team.” The Courthouse Board meets once a month, and Board members tend to do some House Managing of events, and also take a particular interest in one or two aspects of the Courthouse’s life.

Anyone who is interested in this varied and rewarding role is invited to arrange to meeting with a current Board member so that they can find out more about what the role involves. Simply email and a Board member will get in touch.
